More than 95% of electricity generated in Poland comes from the combustion of fossil fuels - mainly coal and lignite. The structure of fuels used by PGE is similar.
In 2010 PGE Capital Group generated about 53 TWh (net) of electricity in total; 51.6 TWh was generated in conventional power plants (hard coal- and lignite-fired) and cogeneration plants owned by PGE Górnictwo i Energetyka Konwencjonalna S.A. The remaining part of energy was generated from renewable sources.
With a total generation capacity of 12.2 GW and 40% market share PGE Capital Group is the market leader in electricity production in Poland. Own lignite resources enable PGE Capital Group to gain independence taking into consideration fuels supplies. PGE’s mines supplying Bełchatów and Turów Power Plants excavated in total 43.2 mln tones of lignite in 2010 and thus covered 68% of Groups’ demand for fuel. Apart from electricity, each year PGE Capital Group's power plants and cogeneration plants produce ca. 25,6 million GJ of heat, which makes PGE the leader in heat generation in Poland.
PGE Górnictwo i Energetyka Konwencjonalna S.A. has currently 11 branches. After integration with PGE Elektrownia Opole S.A., there will be 12 of them.
