Conventional Power Generation

More than 95% of electricity generated in Poland comes from the combustion of fossil fuels - mainly coal and lignite. The PGE Capital Group's area of Conventional Power Generation comprises Mining Companies and Generation Companies, i.e. two lignite mines, 4 power plants and ten cogeneration plants.

The Mining Companies satisfy 68% of the PGE Capital Group's demand for fuels. In 2008 our lignite mines excavated together 45 million tons of lignite, which constituted 76% of Poland's lignite output.

In 2008 the PGE Capital Group generated 56 TWh of electricity; 55.9 TWh was generated in conventional power plants and cogeneration plants (the remaining part was generated from renewables). With a total generation capacity of 12.4 GW and a 42% share in the market, the PGE Capital Group is the biggest producer of electricity in Poland.

Apart from electricity, each year the PGE Capital Group's power plants and cogeneration plants produce close to 22 million GJ of heat, which makes PGE the leader in heat generation in Poland.
