PGE is Poland's leader in wholesale electricity trade. Within the PGE Capital Group, the area of wholesale trade is managed and coordinated by PGE Electra S.A. In 2008 the PGE Capital Group sold on the wholesale market 26.4 TWh of electricity.

The PGE Capital Group is the only power company in Poland which generates more electricity than is demanded by its end users. PGE Electra S.A. sells electricity not only to entities belonging to the PGE Capital Group but also to other power companies operating on the Polish market.

Selected wholesale transactions on the domestic market are carried out also with the participation of PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna S.A. As far as foreign markets are concerned, PGE Electra S.A. holds shares in ELECTRA Deutschland GmbH.

PGE Electra S.A. deals with the following types of operations:

• the wholesale of electricity conducted in its own name and on behalf of and for other entities, on both the domestic and foreign markets;
• the trade in property rights to certificates of origin for electricity generated from renewable resources or in cogeneration with thermal power
• the provision of lignite and other fuels for the power generation sector
• the trade in CO2 emission allowances
• the provision of commercial balancing services for the entities belonging to the  PGE Capital Group
