The Distribution System Operators of the PGE Capital Group deal with the operation, maintenance and development of the grid infrastructure. Therefore, they impact on the environmental and social surrounding. To reduce the unfavourable environmental impact of their activities, the distribution companies run a series of programmes related to environmental protection. Among the activities characteristic for this business line we may mention their activities related to bird protection e.g. assembling platforms for stork nests, the installation of fluorescent plates scaring birds away from overhead power lines.
Too numerous and too heavy nests may cause damage to the poles
and may cause power failures. Power emergency service personnel repair the nests when the birds migrate. for this they use bucket trucks and other equipment necessary for power grid works. Thanks to the many years of bird observations, it is possible to monitor their behaviours and to determine which platforms are used by storks. Bird protection has become a passion for many power engineers. In their free time they participate in different meetings and trainings organised by environmental organisations. The employees of PGE Dystrybucja Warszawa-Teren and the members of the "Stork" Environmental Association share their experience even with power engineers abroad e.g. in Ukraine, where thanks to the newly installed nest platforms the number of settling storks has increased considerably.
Another initiative implemented in cooperation with the "Stork" Environmental Association aiming at the protection of storks and kestrels and at securing the non-failure operation of power grids is the replacement of the SN switches with new ones which are safer for birds. The investment was funded as a part of the "Protection of white storks of the Masovian Lowland" programme within the "Ecofund" scheme.
